Flashback Friday: A little Nudge

Today is the girls last day of school, school is not actually out until next Thursday, but we have a family Emergency and we will be headed to Vegas in the morning. Anyway, I was reflecting on the past school year and tears filled my eyes as I realized how perfectly placed the girls were into there perspective classrooms!!

The thought came to me that while all the things preceding our move to Colorado were difficult/stressful/sad/frustrating, they were set before us as a roadblock, not to hinder our progress but to draw our eye to another path. This new path has provided our family with opportunities, blessings, and joy, it was a little NUDGE from the Lord.

Before our move I had the distinct feeling that we needed to move for not only the job, but for the sake of our children. I wasn't sure why or which child, and today I realized that it had been especially for my girls. Grace was set in the most perfect Kindergarten class, her teacher has been so patient, so kind and truly provided a safe place for her to be each afternoon. Lexi has made so many friends and loves her teachers, she needed the change so much. She is happy and blossoming into such a great young women, I really find it mind boggling that she will be going into Middle School next year.

The Lord has blessed our family so much this past year, I know I have said this many times before but it's true and I can't let it go unnoticed and unappreciated.

Just a couple days ago

First of all it is not right that Lexi's hair grows that quickly and Grace looks like a big kid now!!! What a great year they have had!!

(oh and as a side note I will be in Vegas for the next little while so if my Blog suffers my apologies in advance)

Happy Friday!

Happy Birthday My Grace!

Today is my Gracie's Birthday!! I can't believe that 6 years has gone by and she has only had stitches ONCE (knocking on wood now)!! To be honest I try to forget the last few weeks of my pregnancy with Grace because I was 3 weeks overdue and a total NUT CASE by the time I had her but I suppose that was the warm up for her arrival!!

Grace is funny, silly, imaginative, wild, thoughtful, loving, affectionate, passionate and so many other amazing qualities. My life would have been way too boring without Grace, she humbled me, strengthened me and just plain toughened me up in just a few short years! When you are blessed with a child like Grace, everyday is eventful, mind twisting and sunny! Her moods are vast and her senses are tuned like a cheetah stalking its prey, one moment she is quiet, gentle and concentrated and the next the beast is released and duck and cover is your only option!

The Lord has something fantastic planned for Grace and I feel so honored to have been chosen to have a front row seat, although sometimes I have to close my eyes. I love being her Mother, even when she is testing all human boundaries and my patience! Happy Birthday Grace

Mom 1..........Bully 0!!!!

I decided to share this next story via video

I would love to hear any thoughts on how best to deal with this situation, maybe your child has gone through something like this or perhaps you are a teacher or you have some insight on what I should do.

Oh on a side note the dresser behind me is a sneak peak at my newly decorated room :)

Love and Thanks

Forgetting the Flash!!! Bad Parenting Moment #4762

There have been many moments of bad parenting, well, maybe not bad, just the "seriously you can't take your eye off of them for a moment", moment!

This afternoon James and I were out front putting a few flowers into our flower pots on the front porch, James was playing in the car with the windows down and listening to music while I was placing the flowers. I turned my back for 3 min, maybe, when I hear "Mom!, Me!" his way of saying "Mom look at me!" I turn around and this is what I find!!!!!!!

I could NOT believe my eyes! I mean he has been doing some "stuff" lately but this takes the cake!!! I had to grab my camera (that was in my purse in the front seat) and take a picture so Jimmy would believe me. Then I swiftly removed him from the roof of my van!! I HAVE NO IDEA how he managed to climb up there, let a lone so quick and without falling! Sheesh, I swear this boy is out to prove his monkeydom or something!!

The Hunt!

Last Wednesday my AMAZING and Thoughtful friend Kari organized an Egg hunt for the kids in the ward. We all met at a park nearby and put out our own kids marked eggs, (side note, Lexi and I had marked all of ours but when we got to the park the names had ALL rubbed off, so annoying!!) OK, back to the event, the kids were beyond anxious to get out there and find their eggs, so after a little instruction, they were off!!

(I am small and cute so I need a head start )

EYE ON THE PRIZE!! There was no distracting little Sophie from the challenge at hand!!!

I asked James to look at the camera, he said "No"

(Kari & Soph having a little lunch)

(and a little treat)

(My sweet friend Miriam and her girls)

My old friend (she's not old, I have just known her for a very long time), Rachel and her girls, who were not interested in a photo op, but Rachel always looks SMOKIN!!

So I waited until they didn't know I was there (sneaky sneaky, I am)

Even though Lexi was busted up and I was a basket case, (no really I was), trying to help them all at the same time, it was a great reason to get out of the house and the kids had a BLAST!!

Jaaaaames!!! Where are You?

James gets bored when it is just he and I during the day. Recently he has been testing out some new hobbies, I was doing the dishes and buddy was helping for a few min before heading up stairs, I thought he went to watch the movie I had started for him earlier. After a few min I went to check on him and this is what I found.
It is all COVERED in soap and he filled the sink up with water, this is after I pulled the plug.

This is what he used to do, aww the good ole days

Just In Case You Thought I Have Been Sitting Around Eating Bon Bons......

Things have recently gone into hyper speed around here, not that we were bored before, but just when I was getting good at keeping the portions on my plate at a healthy level I decided to add a little more here and a little more there and now it appears to be OVERFLOWING! Sheesh, will I EVER learn?? So a run down of everyone and their busyness!

Jimmy- Working hard and earning a nice raise and insurance (coming soon thankfully), devoting many evenings to his website to get it poppin, working out with his friend Rob and getting in some deserved time away with a Guys night (he's making friends, we are so proud!! ), and still rockin the nursery where all the little girls seem to heart him!

Marylin- Still doing laundry, cooking, cleaning, started training for her first race (a 10K), enjoying her calling in YoungWomens (getting ready for New Beginnings), working on 7 different sewing projects, participating in the ward cooking and book clubs, pausing for girls nights, bathing and sleeping, and only one small nervous break down!

Met the sidewalk up close and personal after slipping on ice while running, good times!

Alexis- Loving 5th Grade, part of the reading club, getting straight A's ( a blessing), enjoying her friends, getting an allowance (when she does her chores), great big sister, messy room keeper, missing her Grandma & Grandpa Holler, and getting way too tall!

Grace- Working very hard in Kindergarten and making tons of progress, attended several friends birthday parties, roller skated for the first time, tags along with Lexi and her friends on occasion, loves to torture/play with her brother, also getting allowance with completion of chores, and making all of us laugh on a daily basis!

James (Buddy or Dude)- Decided that 1 was way too boring brought 2 in with a bang, mural drawing, new words everyday, still sleeping in his crib (amen), loves watching Matilda and Mickey Mouse Club House, finally growing into his size 24 months clothing, eats cheese like a mouse, thinks he is the funniest thing since his Dad!

Whisper (the cat)- 8 years old and lazy as ever, loves her family so very much (especially her human mom), enjoying the new family members Coco, Chanel & Princess!!

Family Update: As a whole we are all doing well, we still LOVE Colorado and the area we live in! We welcomed 3 baby Dumbo Rats into our home a few weeks ago, they have made for great pets, and the kids LOVE them! Jimmy will be signed to a new contract (in May) at the base so we will be here for at least one more year (hoping for more), we are healthy, happy and feeling at HOME! Oh we also LOVE visitors so come one, come all!!

Sunday Scripture! A Day of Rest

Hebrews 4:4

"For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works."

It has been a long week and I am tired but I wanted to let you all know I have a sincere gratitude for the idea of taking one day out of the week to rest and reflect. The Lord is very wise.

All my Love and Happy Sunday!

Oh and the winner will be announced tomorrow after I get all the entries tallied!

Graces' Story

My Grace, that's what I call her, cause she and I have this bond that goes straight from her heart to mine! Through the years of blogging I have shared many of her antics, silly quotes and some of her struggles. Recently though I was thinking about how I have never really told "her story", so today is the day.

I knew about Miss Grace before she was born, I knew she would be spicy, full of energy and strong willed, was I totally prepared, no!! Grace began her journey in only the way that Grace could and that was on her terms, I was three weeks overdue with her and they still had to induce me!! I think she wanted it that way, you know, "go a head and make me!", I can just hear her now! As an infant she was full of smiles and even very young she would stick her tongue out at us, not just normal baby figuring out how it works, but intentionally sticking it out as if she was saying "Suckas!, you have no idea what you are in for!".

She was a great sleeper from the first night home from the hospital and continued in that vain until about 18 months and then things changed, but we are getting ahead of ourselves. When Grace began getting her teeth I noticed that her two front teeth came in with weak spots, well as she got more and more teeth she would chew on the railing of her crib and one day the two front teeth chipped. She eventually had to have surgery to place porcelain crowns on them to make them stronger, this was at 20 months old, two years later Grace bumped one of these teeth and had to have it removed, thus the toothless smile.

When Grace was about 8 months old we started teaching her sign language and she did really well with that but as the months went on and other children her age were saying lots of words, Grace seemed to prefer signing and not speaking. As she turned two I wasn't extremely worried but I noticed that her fits were becoming worse because she wasn't able to say the things she wanted to say and it was hard to guess. By the time she was 3 I really noticed that her speech was behind other kids and she was struggling with the whole potty training thing as well. Another difficulty was her sleep "issues", that was, that she didn't. She would stay up nearly all night playing, making HUGE messes and then be irritable the next day, this went on for a couple years. As the Mom, I just tried to encourage her the best I could and prayed that I would be guided in how to help her. I also began noticing more and more that she was VERY sensitive to certain things like, Hot and Cold, certain fabrics and noises. She spent most of her life with only diapers/underwear on because clothing only made her more irritated and uncomfortable. Some of her favorite things to do would be to stand against a cold glass window or stand in the fridge when the door was opened just to cool off. Grace was also EXTREMELY mischievous, getting into EVERYTHING and making huge messes where ever she went. Weather it was catchup or ranch dumped under the table, flour all over the house, eggs cracked on the coffee table, cutting her sister's hair, eaten crayons, erasers and paper strewn about, life has never been boring. And yet she is probably the funniest child I have known and for sure the funniest in the house, so she has managed to stay alive!

When the age of pre-school approached I began talking with several friends and family to see what the best option might be for her. I knew she would need someone patient and kind, to love her unconditionally and that is EXACTLY what we found with Mrs. Brough! It was months and months of work to get her into the pre-school program with the Clark County School District, and when her testing didn't go so well because she butted heads with the women giving it, I figured she was a shoe-in!! We actually began the process in April of 2008 but she wasn't able to start school (due to their slow paper work processing) until December of 2008! This would become a HUGE turning point for Grace in many ways!

For the first time there was a teacher that was almost as in Love with Grace as I am, she made her teacher laugh and I would get regular emails and updates of the latest "Grace-isms"! Grace LOVED school, riding the bus, and all the friends she was making. With the help of her teacher and through the process of getting her into the program we determined that Grace has something referred to as Sensory Processing Disorder or Sensory Integration Disorder. Children with SPD are often sensitive to sound, touch, sight, smell and taste, it can be all or just some of these things, but when I heard about this first from another family member I could see so much of this in Grace. I knew this is what we were dealing with and once I began doing some research on how it effects these children and the things to help them cope, it seemed like everything became much easier to handle.

As a family we work to be attentive to Grace's needs, while still expecting her to be responsible for her actions. She has really good days and not so good days, but she and I have made up songs to help sooth her and she is learning to remove her self from situations that are too intense. It is a work in progress and we are learning new and improved tactics all the time as well as adjusting old ones to meet her needs now.

As a Mom I cry lots and worry about the other kids accepting her. It's hard to hear the comments and notice the stares when we are out in public when she has a break down. She still prefers to not have clothes on and the constant comments about that can get old, I just feel like saying "You have no idea what you are talking about, if you only knew that Grace wearing clothes is the least of my worries today!" It's tough because I can't wear a sign that says "Please be patient with my child." so I just try to inform those that are working with her on a regular basis on how best to deal.

Grace is leaps and bounds better than she was even a year ago, her speech delay is almost unnoticeable and her "break downs" are getting less frequent. I don't know if she will ever out grow or be completely rid of all these things but I do know that I work hard as her Mom to love her and teach her the best I know how. She has a wonderful teacher this year who emails me, sometimes daily to let me know of Grace's progress and set backs. Moving was especially tough for her but she seems to be doing much better, when we first got to Colorado she would tell me how much she hated it here and how she wanted to go back to "our little house" in Vegas. Now, she tells me she loves that it's cold outside and can't wait for the snow to come!

It's hard to send your child out into the world/school/church, knowing that they will be made fun of or left out because of something like SPD, but Grace keeps smiling that toothless smile, singing her song and being her funny self! Me, well I just pray that each day will be a success!
